Taking on Utility Companies to Lower your Bills

Upstate New Yorkers pay some of the highest utility bills in the country, and greedy corporations are trying to charge even more – all while service deteriorates and their foreign parent companies post record profits. It’s robbery. Josh is fighting them every step of the way, to hold the utility monopolies accountable and lower your bills.

Saving You Money

The very first bill Josh introduced in Congress will help families save up to $400 a year by making energy-saving home upgrades that cut utility bills. Josh’s Weatherization Enhancement and Readiness Act is a straightforward way to keep heat in, bills down, and more money in your wallet.

Keeping the Lights Local

Foreign-owned utility companies like NYSEG & Central Hudson want us to pay more while they rake in record profits and send millions overseas. Josh introduced the Keep the Lights Local Act to ban foreign ownership of utilities, because that money should stay in our community, not line the pockets of foreign executives.

Opposing Rate Hikes

Utility bills are an emergency, and Josh is treating them that way. He opened an investigation into the billing practices of Upstate utility companies, and when NYSEG and Central Hudson tried to raise rates again, he took them to court — the first time a member of Congress has ever stepped into a rate case to stop a utility from hiking prices. He’s using every tool he has to lower costs.

During the winter, we keep our heat at just 58 degrees. Now that it’s summer, we haven’t even put our air conditioners in. Still, our bill was almost $800. Everyone I talk to feels the same. I’m a registered nurse and one of my patients last winter used a hair dryer to warm his feet because he couldn’t afford to heat his home. He ended up with third-degree burns. These bills are literally forcing us to risk our health and safety just to get by.

Over just the last year my utility bills have tripled, and we’ve had to reorganize every dollar we spend just to help pay for them. That means no vacation this year. I’ve even stopped taking one of my prescriptions to save money. Our bill is unsustainable—$460 one month, $560 the next, now $700. How is anyone supposed to afford this? At this point, we may need to leave New York just to survive.

My NYSEG bill is nearly as high as my mortgage, and I can’t afford to pay them both. I’m a public school teacher working multiple jobs. I turn off and unplug everything, keep the house at uncomfortable temperatures, and still had a bill of almost $900 one month. I don’t know how I’ll make it through winter. I’ll lose my power or my home this year.
